BBC Proms Underway

The BBC Proms 2010 are currently underway at Royal Albert Hall in London. The Proms, which is an all-classical concert series, began in 1895 and consists of nearly 90 performances this year. While Royal Albert Hall houses the larger shows, Cadogan Hall hosts chamber music events and Proms in the Park includes concerts all over the United Kingdom on the “Last Night.”

The massive festival yields unsurpassed attendance with tickets available at all different price points. The Telegraph is attending to the grandeur of it all with coverage of each individual prom; tomorrow will begin with the 23rd prom of this summer’s season.

Sting and Trudie Styler Star in Schumann Romance Film

Twin Spirits, a film about the romance between Robert Schumann and his wife-to-be Clara Wieck, will premier tonight, December 3, at an event hosted by WNYC’s The Greene Space, WQXR 105.9, and Music Unites—a New York based music education charity. The event is a benefit for both Music Unites, and the Royal Opera House Education programs.

The film chronicles the romance between Robert and Clara Schumann with an amalgam of narration, music, and acting. While Sting and Trudie Styler read from the letters exchanged between Robert and Clara, musicians will embody the spirit of the composers by performing their music. The film will also be narrated by Sir Derek Jacobi.

Finally, those who are not able to attend the premier can watch the film online starting at 6:30pm today at www.wnyc.org/thegreenespace and www.wqxr.org, followed by an audio stream of Elliot Forrest’s conversation with Sting and Trudie Styler.

Maazel Conducts Symphony of a Thousand

Atlanta Symphony: Star Wars and Holst

Mei-Ann Chen will conduct an audio/visual spectacle in Atlanta on July 11. The program will feature Gustav Holst’s The Planets, accompanied by images of our solar system to parallel the music. The program also includes music from John Williams’s Star Wars Suite as well as Strauss’s Also sprach Zarathustra. The program is July 11 at 8:00pm.

Atlanta Symphony: Carmina Burana and Barber of Seville

Music Director Robert Spano will conduct his only summer performance with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. The program will consist of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, and The Barber of Seville. The program is June 20, 8:00pm.

Baltimore Symphony: Distant Worlds

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra is performing Distant Worlds: music from Final Fantasy. It is an audio/visual presentation including lights and videos from popular Final Fantasy sequences. The concert will be at Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, Saturday June 27 at 8:00pm.
